'Emma' Report

Reeeeaaaaallllllyyyyyy having a hard time with this one. I find the language very difficult to read and understand. I think the only thing saving me is knowing that the movie 'Clueless' was loosely based on this book.
I hate to say this to all the Jane Austen fans out there, but I think this may be the one and only book of hers I will read. I am going to finish it. It's just going to take a while.

  1. If I had known this was your first Jane Austen novel, I probably would not have recommended Emma. But that is because it is not my favorite. Pride and Prejudice is one of my all-time favorite books, and I also really like Northanger Abbey.

Here are my two tips: First, I would try to get more comfortable with the story by watching a movie of it,(sorry Clueless doesn't count although it was based on Emma) you should be able to find one at the library.

Second- Don't take Jane Austen too seriously. She was famous for her satire. As an early feminist, she was often mocking the culture of her day through sarcasm and irony. She was essentially pointing out the weaknesses both of the culture of the elite and the individual personality flaws.

Okay, and if worse gets to worse, use SparkNotes or something to help you pull through it.http://www.sparknotes.com/lit/emma/

    Good luck!
